  4. Country Description: The Republic of Palau is a constitutional democracy
  5. administered by the United States as the Trust Territory of the Pacific
  6. Islands since July 18, 1947, pursuant to a trusteeship agreement approved by
  7. the United Nations.  It has a developing agrarian economy.  Tourist
  8. facilities are available only on a limited basis.

  10. Entry Requirements:  Proof of U.S. citizenship and an onward/return ticket
  11. are required for stays of up to 30 days.  Extensions are available in Palau
  12. for a $50 fee.  Further specific information is available through the Office
  13. of the Palau Representative, 444 North Capitol Street, Suite 208,
  14. Washington, D.C. 20001, telephone (202) 624-7793.

  16. Medical Facilities:  Health facilities in the Republic of Palau are adequate
  17. for routine medical care, but limited in availability and quality.  Doctors
  18. and hospitals often expect immediate cash payment for health services.  U.S.
  19. medical insurance is not always valid outside the United States.
  20. Supplemental medical insurance which specifically covers overseas treatment
  21. has proved useful.  The international travelers hotline of the Centers for
  22. Disease Control at (404) 332-4559 has additional useful health information.

  24. Information on Crime:  The crime rate in the Republic of Palau is low.  The
  25. loss or theft abroad of a U.S. passport should be reported immediately to
  26. local police and to the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate.  Useful
  27. information on guarding valuables and protecting personal security while
  28. traveling abroad is provided in the Department of State pamphlet, "A Safe
  29. Trip Abroad."  It is available from the Superintendent of Documents, U.S.
  30. Government Printing Office, Washington D.C. 20402.

  32. Drug Penalties:  Travelers are subject to the laws and legal practices of
  33. the country in which they travel.  Penalties for possession, use, or
  34. trafficking in illegal drugs are strict, and convicted offenders can expect
  35. jail sentences and fines.

  37. Other Penalties:  Firearms of any kind are strictly prohibited in Palau.
  38. The penalty for possession of a firearm is up to fifteen years imprisonment.

  40. Registration:  Americans who register at the U.S. Liaison office can obtain
  41. updated information on travel and security within the area.
